Well it is winter once again and -40 seems like -100, but you still have to drag your sorry butt to work in the morning. How I wish I still lived in BC, where it snows a foot and the whole town shuts down, people dont leave their houses, but sit inside by the fire and bake cookies (or make moonshine), and only venture out to go snowboarding, skiing, or toboganning. But, Fort Mac is where the money is! And up here in the great white north, instead of people locking themselves in their houses, they just break out the hummer instead of the $50,000 harley, or whatever sports car they drive in the summer time that is worth about as much as other people in the world pay for their houses.
Up here in the Mac, to rent a one bedroom apartment costs around $1500 a month. And all that means is that you have your "own place" and not living in someone elses for $1000 just for a room. The apartments up here are the equivalent to the "crack-shacks" you see in Calgary or Edmonton, but when you live in your own apartment people think you are rich. I have to mention as well that even to pay that much is insane since like myself, most people up here work around 80 hours a week, going to work at 5am and getting home at 8pm, you are treating your home like a hotel anyway.
My dad told me that Fort McMurray is like Deadwood back in the days of the goldrush. All the workers come here to make the money, the hard workers that is. But you also get all the con-artists, gamblers, drug pushers, etc. They come up here because they know that people have money and "cabin fever" so they can make their money the easy way, while others work their asses off. And I know that he is right. The one casino in town is constantly packed with people (mostly the wives) spending all of their (husbands) hard earned money, all of the bars in town have a line up if you go past 10 pm, especially the Newfie Club. And there is so many drugs up here it is disgusting.
Apparently crack only stays in your system for a few days, unlike marajuana which stays for a month or so. So while everyone on site gets random drug tests, they are hooked on crack, not marajuana. Crazy, since if you go on holidays for 3 weeks, and while you are vacationing in Jamaica, say, you smoke some good ol' homegrown ganja and go back to work after the 3 weeks and get drug tested you lose your job, while all the crack-heads are still working. Go Figure.
Two doors down from my house in Fort McMurray an eighteen year old kid was shot and killed. It was a well known crack house. I could sit on my front step and in the time it took me to have a cigarette, see 3 cars pull up, go inside, come out and leave. Now I might add that these people going to this place are not young kids. The ones that I saw are like 55 yr. old men that just came from working on site. The morning the kid got shot there, the news and papers says "Well known crack house". Well then, if it was so well known (which it was because cabs wont even come to our house 2 houses down) then why didnt the cops shut it down???
Anyway, life in Fort McMurray is simple...go to work, go home, shower, make lunch, go to bed, go to work, go home, shower, make lunch.....
